The new Guide to Property Investment in Portugal, The Property Handbook is a practical handbook with all the essential information to support investors in the Portuguese market, while explaining the legal and tax implications associated with investments in our market.
At a time when we are witnessing a turning point, with financial markets now showing positive signs, The Property Handbook gives the potential investor a quick understanding of how to analyze real estate opportunities in Portuguese territory.
The Property Handbook is the result of a partnership between CBRE and legal firm Garrigues and includes a presentation of the country, highlights of the macroeconomic indicators and the commercial property market progress over the last ten years, as well as the country's legal and fiscal framework. The introduction is signed by Carlos Moedas, Secretary of State to the Prime Minister, who conveys a message of confidence about the country.

“I think that Lisboa has a tremendous potential to become a leading centre of Europe, if not the world: I felt it from the first time I came to visit. This idea is getting brighter and stronger as I'm able to know the city and its citizens better.
What I'm impressed more is its ability to be open to the future while maintaining a strong respect and love for its past, not only for the big things but also for the small details and things of everyday life. It is a city that flows without washing away its past. I think this will be a winning quality in the challenges of the globalized world.”
Vincenzo Micarelli (2012)

Last week we started our Twitter Campaign. My friend, Andrew Wong recently left Yahoo in San Francisco to Co-found, Moonlight Marketing, a company specializing in social media marketing.
The great thing about being an internet startup is that the world is our market and with technology, I can work from anywhere and be connected to anyone on skype. I can operate and manage a company from my blackberry and I can work with people who are talented – no matter where they are located.
Andrew is one of these talented people! He helped launch Yahoo’s APT exchange platform for display advertising. In one week his company has connected us to like-minded people around the world who share my passions in life: fashion, contemporary art and photography, design, social responsibility, philanthropies, boutique design hotels, spas, organic lifestyle, independent music, films and venture capital. In one week, I am following 1000 people and 400 people are following and tweeting me with messages like “Hey Claire, great to connect to you, we love organic bamboo fashion materials too!” and …Hi Claire- “Keep me posted, we believe in social responsibility too.”
Andrew did his due diligence and asked me a lot of questions. One of them was: “From all the cities you lived in- which is your favorite? Taipei, Houston, New York, Hong Kong, London, Milan or Lisbon?
This is the one question I could not answer. I’m part of a new generation of global nomads that are rootless. I speak 4 languages and just started to learn my 5th, Portuguese. I feel just at home in São Paolo as I do in Shanghai. I have friends and family spread across every time zone in the world. My 400 friends on Facebook span from trusted loyal dear friends from high school to my new friends and aquaintances in Lisbon.
But if the question was posed in another way, in which city did you find the people most welcoming to you – then without any hesitation, the answer is Lisbon.

Investing is a decision that must be carefully thought of. There are many factors and reasons you should take into consideration in such decision: access to markets, talent pool availability, implementation and running costs, just to name a few.
The city of Lisbon, a modern and cosmopolitan European capital, has exceptional conditions for locating your company and guarantee the success of your investments. Here you will find the 10 main advantages this ancient merchant town has to offer:
1. Lisbon is a privileged access platform to 500 million European consumers, offering modern transport and logistics infrastructures, such as up-to-date railroads and highways, proximity to the ports of Lisbon, Setúbal and Sines and the airport - ten minutes drive from the city's centre - offering low cost connections to multiple European and transcontinental destinations;
2. Lisbon has privileged business and cultural connections with the seven countries that share the Portuguese language, of which Angola, Brazil and Mozambique stand out due to their considerable dimension. It is the ideal location for companies who seek export and investment opportunities in those emerging markets with 250 million consumers. In the same way, Lisbon cultivates historical trade relationships with the Latin American markets, the United States and Canada, the Arab World and the region of Maghreb;
3. Lisbon has highly qualified, flexible, creative, multilingual and competitive human resources. The average hourly labor cost in Portugal is about half of that of the European Union average. It is also home to universities and researchers of outstanding quality, particularly in the health sector. It is the right place for setting-up research and development or service centres;
4. Being a capital, Lisbon gathers decision-making centres essential to business development, offers a modern network of technological and communication infrastructures, as well as a wide range of excellent quality product and service suppliers;
5. In Lisbon, social stability and active policies regarding entrepreneurship, innovation and cutting red-tape generate the ideal conditions for business implementation and growth;
6. Lisbon is at the centre of a region that generates 40% of the national GDP. Its 3 million consumers are open to innovation and to new products and services;
7. In Lisbon, people enjoy an unparalleled quality of life: a mild climate, an unique luminosity, hospitable people, several landscapes, and an original gastronomy with a Mediterranean flavour. It is the European capital with the highest number of golf courses and golden beaches, only 15 minutes away from the city's centre;
8. Lisbon is a touristic city per se, where invaluable historic heritage and cultural authenticity mix with the latest trends. It is one of the most seeked out cities to host business conferences and events, since it combines modern infrastructures with a diversified leisure offer at highly competitive costs;
9. Lisbon is a hip and modern city with constant activity - 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Concerts, festivals, exhibitions, sports events and entertainment are a permanent reality;
10. Lisbon offers a wide river front and privileged access to the Atlantic, being a confluence port of massive cruises and navigation routes. It is the capital of the European country with the largest exclusive economic zone and it is here that the European Maritime Safety Agency is located.
